Today the last living 9/11 Ground Zero search dog returned to the World Trade Center site.

Bretagne is a 15 year old Golden Retriever who arrived at the site along with her handler and owner, Denise Corliss – who were both inducted into the Texas Task Force 1 to help in the search and rescue mission.

During their mission, the K-9 corp – which numbered about 300 – worked in 12 hour shifts. Bretagne was only about 3 at the time, but very much up for the task.

And when the task wasn’t about search and rescue, it was all about performing therapy duty for the men and women who worked at the Ground Zero site.

This is an animal that goes above and beyond.

According to this article in the NY Daily News, she is now retired from rescue service, but still works in Texas elementary school to work with special needs children.

“She’s had a life of service,” Corliss said.

And to that end I accord her the honor of “Ray the Ray – Hero of the Day!”
