Authorities say a passenger repeatedly stabbed a taxi driver and stole the man's vehicle, then later returned and tried to run him over with the cab.

It wasn't clear what sparked the incident, which occurred late Saturday night.

Aberdeen police tell the Asbury Park Press that the 55-year-old driver had picked up the male passenger at a convenience store in nearby Keyport and drove him to an address in Aberdeen, where a scuffle ensued.

A resident heard the commotion and came to the driver's aid. The passenger fled in the cab, but soon returned and tried unsuccessfully to run down the driver before driving off.

The driver was flown to a hospital, where he remained Sunday afternoon. He was listed in critical condition, but further details were not disclosed.
