A shooting in Jersey City involving a police officer who tried to stop a stolen car is under investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor Esther Suarez said two plainclothes Jersey City police officers tried to stop a stolen vehicle at the corner of Ocean and Virginia avenues around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. One of the officers shot at the driver, who was the only person inside, according to Suarez. The driver was hospitalized for gunshots to the upper body and is in critical but stable condition Suarez said.

NJ Advance Media reported the officer opened fire as he was being dragged by the vehicle and hit the driver in the head.

The officers were treated and released from a hospital, with one of them sustaining an injury to his foot.

Prosecutors did not release the names of anyone involved in the shooting, including the officers or the suspect.
