If you are a New Jersey resident and you are confused about who to tip and how much to tip them, you are not alone. If there were only a New Jersey tipping guide.

The Ultimate New Jersey Tipping Guide

The whole conversation started when I went to a drive-thru to get coffee the other day, and for the first time, they spun around a tablet so I could choose my tip percentage.

I'm not even sure how much I gave because there was a glare, I couldn't see, and I was surprised.

Don't get me wrong, the workers who keep that line moving and get the order right a vast majority of the time deserve a reward, but that's not always the case, and yet we're constantly being asked how much we want to tip.

Most listeners are generous tippers, but lines that need to be drawn in some circumstances.

If I'm sitting, I tip, if I'm standing I don't. Frank, Somerville

On the surface, that makes sense, but sometimes you want to tip a hard-working barista even if you're standing when you order.

I came up with my own ultimate guidelines. I think they may help you. They seem fair to me.

Restaurant - I tip the server a minimum of 25%, more if I see them frequently, or if they've done an outstanding job.

Drive-thru - The bills are usually lower, but I try to tip in the 20% range for drive-thru workers.

Walk-in coffee shop - Same as the drive-thru

Mail carrier - A nice tip a few times during the year, usually holidays, but there are rules. They can't accept cash, so get them a gift card. I usually give a $20 card a couple of times a year.

Hair Stylist - If I were you, I'd want to keep them happy. I think a 20% tip in cash does it.

Food Delivery Person - They aren't a server, but they do have to drive to your home. I tip them the same way I tip a restaurant server.

This is my ultimate guide to tipping in New Jersey. Hope it helps you, and I hope it makes everyone happy.
