The signs are all there — summer’s winding down whether we like it

Nobody announces the end of summer. It just starts showing up in small pieces, one at a time, until you look up and realize the season's basically over even though the calendar insists you've got weeks left.

It's a little darker when I wake up now. The late-afternoon sun has a different glow to it, a different vibe entirely, and it's setting before 8 p.m. again. I'm just starting to notice the first hint of a change in the leaves. It was the tiniest bit cool out this morning, barely enough to register, but enough. The birds aren't as busy or as loud as they were a month ago. The cicadas, meanwhile, are working overtime, like they know something the rest of us are only starting to figure out. Back-to-school ads have been running for what feels like months at this point. And most college kids are already back on campus.

That last one is the real tell. When the college kids leave, the Jersey Shore feels it immediately, and this week gave us a textbook example.

When the lifeguards leave, you know it's real

Seaside Park had to close numerous blocks to swimming this week because it didn't have enough lifeguards to staff them, and lifeguard captain Jim Rankin didn't sugarcoat why: this is the stretch where high school and college-age guards start peeling off for the fall. "Usually the last week of the year we rely heavily on those high school kids that we have to kind of float us to Labor Day weekend," Rankin said, noting he's a teacher himself and will be back in his own classroom soon. News 12 reported that once the guards clock out for the day, watch duty shifts to the fire department, which has spent the summer training new members specifically to cover exactly this kind of gap.

Down in Ocean City, the same story just closed out an entire attraction for the year. NJ.com reported that OC Waterpark announced this week that Friday, August 21, would be the final day guests can float the lazy river this season, explaining on social media that too many of its seasonal lifeguards are already heading back to school to safely staff it. The rest of the water park stays open, with discounted admission offered once the lazy river shuts down, and the ride itself will return for the 2027 season. Small detail, big signal. When a Shore attraction starts closing pieces of itself off before Labor Day even arrives, summer's cover is blown.

The good news: there's still time, and then there's locals summer

We're not done yet. There are still a few real summer weekends left before Labor Day, storms and all. And once the crowds finally do clear out, there's a whole season a lot of us who live here year-round genuinely look forward to: locals summer. Quieter beaches, shorter lines, a boardwalk you can actually walk down without dodging fourteen people at once. Pumpkin spice on the side, whether you want it there or not.

Summer isn't over. But it's starting to tell on itself, one small sign at a time.
