New Jersey law enforcement officials say a new initiative has resulted in the seizure of more than 100 illicit guns since January.

State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa says the State Police's new Weapons Trafficking Bureau and Street Gang units have made the seizures, while the Division of Criminal Justice has indicted 29 defendants in connection with 52 illegal guns.

Chiesa says the investigations have focused on seizing weapons in some of the state's most violent areas in an effort to disrupt the supply chain. He says police often use narcotics investigations as an entry point into investigating the illegal sale or possession of weapons.

Chiesa says the statewide effort is also meant to assist local police forces facing staff reductions.
