Newark Man Sentenced For String of Bank Robberies
A Newark man has been sentenced to 96 months in federal prison for a string of bank robberies.
Nathaniel Barreto was also ordered Wednesday to pay $112,515 in restitution and will have to serve three years of supervised release once he's freed from prison.
The 33-year-old Barreto pleaded guilty last October to stealing more than $42,000 from a bank in Hunterdon County. He also admitted robbing eight other New Jersey banks and attempting to rob a ninth between June and August 2010. Most of the banks were in Bergen, Essex and Morris counties.
Barreto was caught after a witness noted the license plate number on a getaway vehicle. The car was found abandoned in a wooded area and Barreto and an accomplice were apprehended nearby.
