New $37M jail planned for New Jersey, officials say

Officials in a southern New Jersey county have awarded more than $37 million to build a new jail.

Cape May County Warden Don Lombardo tells The Press of Atlantic City the county could hold up to 360 inmates, including holding areas and medical.

Lombardo says the county expects to average between 200 and 225 inmates each day once bail reform efforts are fully implemented in January 2017.

Lombardo says excess jail capacity can be rented out to other counties, the Immigration and Naturalization Service or the U.S. Marshall's Service.

County freeholders awarded the construction contract in mid-April to a Farmingdale company.

The jail will be built at the county complex in Cape May Court House next to the existing jail.
