Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe says 19-year-old Dylan Gowan had left a personal watercraft rental business in New York City for the Highlands in New Jersey when the craft was swamped Tuesday night.

Gowan, who lives in the Highlands, was reported missing by relatives around 11 p.m. and an extensive search followed.

Gowan said he swam to the buoy that was northeast of Sandy Hook peninsula.

Rowe says Gowan started swimming toward Sandy Hook after dawn and he was recovered by a Coast Guard boat crew on Wednesday morning.

Gowan was taken to a hospital for treatment of dehydration and hypothermia.
