Imagine working with John Lennon while he was producing the song “Imagine.” That was a “Day in the Life” of music engineer Dennis Ferrante, who told me that the iconic song took about 12 hours to produce. Ferrante, who won a Grammy for his work on Duke Ellington’s box set, worked with Lennon on the Imagine album through “Mind Games” and "Walls and Bridges.” He says that Lennon worked very basic and fast, usually got the job done in no more than two takes.

Dennis also told me about how he was supposed to meet up with John the night he died but was delayed because a Four Tops session went longer than expected.
