Once all the smoke clears and we find out the truth about the role Penn State administrators have played in not know about or overtly covering up former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s alleged assaults against boys in his charge….one still has to wonder….how does the face of Penn State football not know about any of this until March of 2002?

While it’s true  that Coach Paterno did nothing illegal.  The questions that remain are more troubling:

1)      How is someone as close to the coach as Jerry Sandusky was able to commit such heinous acts without the head coach not even having an inkling of what’s going on?

2)      Why, when the 2002 incident was finally brought to Coach Paterno’s attention, did he not, along with current assistant head Coach Mike McQuery, who witnessed the assault, go with McQuery to report the incident to the police.

Last night, I put the weight of responsibility on the shoulders of Coach McQuery to report the incident to the police….not on Coach Paterno.  However, in light of the fact that Coach Paterno was told, albeit without all the facts at hand….still had the moral obligation to accompany McQuery to report the incident to police.

If there’s any reason for Coach Paterno to step down, I think this would sum it up.

He’s the face, not only of the football program, but of the university.  And while his son says he’s looking forward to coaching this week’s game, the smart money says he won’t be on the sidelines.
