We have so many things to see and do here in New Jersey, but now and then it's great to experience a different part of the country.

I took another trip to see my daughter in Texas for the Father's Day weekend. I'm a big fan of the many great wineries that have sprung up in New Jersey over the past 15 or 20 years. So many people have told us about Texas wine country and we decided to take an overnight trip there.

The hub of most of the activity there is Fredericksburg, which is nearly 4 hours from where she lives, so we opted for a town only 3 hours away called Marble Falls. Never heard of it and didn't expect much.

It far surpassed our expectations and we happened to be there on their big weekend.

They held their annual Soap Box Derby this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was like something you'd see in a movie or stepping back 30 years in time. The local folks could not have been friendlier and more accommodating. Real small town heartland America with a Texas flair.

The town is right on the Colorado River and offers plenty to see and do and is close to some unbelievable world class wineries. Driving through the area nearby to get to one winery reminded me of the terrain of Sicily. I was also surprised at the quality of the wines.

If a trip to Texas is on your bucket list, you must check out the wineries and towns of Texas Hill Country.
