Controversy Stalls New NJ “Comfort Women” Memorial

Controversy is delaying the installation of another New Jersey memorial to Asian women forced to provide sex to Japanese soldiers during World War II.

The Record of Woodland Park reports that opposition to the `comfort women' memorial in Fort Lee is coming from Korean groups who support the idea of the memorial, but object to its design and wording.

The comfort women issue remains a point of contention between Japanese and South Korean officials.

Japanese government officials had requested the removal of another New Jersey memorial to comfort women, installed in front of the Palisades Park library in 2010.

A Bergen County Comfort Women Memorial in Hackensack was dedicated in March.

The organizers behind those two memorials say the Fort Lee proposed design could be perceived as anti-Japanese.
