Mental health continues to be a major issue for families and individuals in New Jersey, and finding the right care is key.

Bridgeway Rehabilitation Services doesn't just focus on providing medication to address the symptoms of serious, complex mental illness. They also look at general physical health, affordable and safe housing, and employment or volunteer opportunities so the individual feels like a contributing member of society.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Eric Scott discussed Bridgeway's approach with the nonprofit's president and CEO, Cory Storch.

Often, Bridgeway's clients are referred to them as a sort of last resort, often with bipolar disorder, severe depression and schizophrenia and grappling with substance abuse, the criminal justice system or homelessness. But more than 95 percent of their clients are able to maintain quality, safe housing once their treatment progresses.

”Hope is the most important element of Bridgeway's approach,” Storch said. In the past, some mental health treatment providers would advise patients that they weren't likely to go back to work so they should take their medications and avoid stress.

"That's an old message," Storch said. "The new message is that you can recover; you should go for the goals you want and learn how to manage your mental illness."
