One of the first Ferris wheels in the nation was allegedly at Atlantic City's Steel Pier.

The pier was opened in 1898 and now one of a new generation of "observation wheels" is set to open in just a few weeks. It will be the third largest in the United States. These have become popular all over the world.

Much like the "London Eye," this will attract people from far and wide. If you don't like going up in a helicopter (by the way, the pier also offers helicopter rides), and want to get a bird's eye view of the city and the coastline, this is it!

The Observation Wheel features 40 climate-controlled gondolas and will operate year round. It's set to open around Labor Day but if you're on the AC boardwalk at night, you're in for a visual treat. They light it up every night, and even if you're not taking a ride, it's something to see.
