NEWARK — The circumstances surrounding the death of an 8-year-old-girl found unconscious in an apartment on Sunday afternoon remain unclear.

Newark Police were called to an apartment above a pharmacy on South Orange Avenue around 1:30 p.m. after the girl was found unresponsive, according to Chief Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.

The girl was taken to University Hospital, where Fennelly said she was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m.

Fennelly did not disclose the circumstances of the girl's death nor her identity. An autopsy would determine the cause and manner of death.

One resident told ABC7 Eyewitness News they were not aware anyone was living in the apartment. Another resident, however, told CBS New York her granddaughter went to school with the girl.

Fennelly said the investigation is ongoing.
