A three-alarm fire destroyed eight apartments in New Brunswick on Tuesday morning.

North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company #1 said the fire on Willowbrook Drive at the Willowbrook Apartments broke out around 8:10 a.m with heavy smoke and flames engulfing the building and took about two hours to bring under control. The roof collapsed on top of several fire fighters who were able to get out according to the newspaper.

NBC 4 New York reports a 2-year-old was dropped to safety from a second floor apartment before evacuating herself.

North Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Graulich toldNJ.com the fire appears to have started in a first-floor apartment.

The Red Cross North Jersey Region tweeted they are on site helping families affected by the fire.
