I'm a big proponent of practical measures to protect yourself, your family, your home and business. Whether the threat is targeted specifically toward you and your business or it's a general threat as we see local crimes on the rise and the frightening prospect of school shootings, the best thing you can do is prevent the threat BEFORE it happens. For me and my family, it's about locking the doors, locking the cars AND having a surveillance system that captures people and cars in and around our property.

My friends at Acteon Networks have installed a video surveillance system at my home, and they are passionate about two things that really make a lot of sense as you consider the next steps toward protecting what you value:

1) You shouldn't wait for something bad to happen to you or someone else to take a serious look at security at your business. A good video surveillance system can help you if someone steals catalytic converters from vehicles in your fleet, if a slip and fall leaves you vulnerable to a lawsuit, if you find property damage ... and too many other hypothetical situations to list.

2) Wireless video cameras are really affordable, but they also are really easy to disable. While you think a wireless camera is watching over your business or parking lot, someone can flood your wireless access point with deauthentication frames that cause the camera to need to re-authenticate, pushing the camera off the network long enough for mischief to occur. The bad guys can attack this way without breaking your strong, encrypted password that you're sure no one can ever break.

I have written about preventative security measures before, especially when it comes to our schools. If you are a school administrator and you have ANY concern about your safety and the safety of the kids, please read my recent article and call my friends at Acteon Networks.

It's a serious vulnerability, so if you're serious about protecting your business, connect with Acteon Networks at acteon.net or by calling (833) 422-8366.
