Rutgers Appoints Task Force to Examine Governance

Rutgers' Board of Governors is forming a task force to look at how the university is governed.

The move comes weeks after a push began by some lawmakers to take away the powers of the school's Board of Trustees.

Gov. Chris Christie has joined with lawmakers saying the university could be governed more efficiently without the trustees.

Faculty members and the trustees themselves have said that the state government does not have the legal authority to eliminate the board, and that doing so would hurt the university.

Board of Governors Chairman Gerald Harvey says that the school should examine how it is run during a time of transformation. This month, the university took over most of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, including two medical schools.
