State police say a woman was killed and a man was seriously injured when their car crashed on the Garden State Parkway in northern New Jersey.

But it's still not clear what caused the crash, which occurred Thursday night in Bloomfield.

Forty-five-year-old Jesetta Taylor of Passaic, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 27-year-old John Mix of Paterson, remained hospitalized Friday in critical condition, but further details on his injuries were not disclosed.

State police say Mix apparently lost control of his car around milepost 152. The car then ran off the road, struck a guardrail and continued up an embankment before it struck a tree.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
