EAST RUTHERFORD — New Jersey State Police are asking fans attending the NY Giants home opener at MetLife Stadium Sunday afternoon to "be vigilant" in the wake of two explosions yesterday in Seaside Park and Chelsea, New York.

In a statement on its Facebook page Sunday prior to the NY Giants' 1 p.m. kickoff, NJ State Police said they are working with authorities throughout the region to identify any possible security breaches.

"The New Jersey State Police is working with our federal, state, county, and local law enforcement partners in New Jersey, New York, and the region to identify any potential security threats," police said.

The explosion in Seaside Park took place in the morning prior to the start of the Semper 5K charity run. A garbage can along the route exploded, but no injuries were reported, according to authorities. Investigators are still working to identify a possible suspect and speaking on CNN Sunday morning, Gov. Chris Christie said police have "several promising leads" but no arrests have been made.

Hours after the incident at the Jersey Shore, another explosion took place on West 23rd Street in Manhattan around 8:30 p.m. The blast injured injuring 29 people, shattered windows and caused extensive street closures. Witnesses said the explosion appeared to have come from a nearby Dumpster and authorities have indicated that it may have been a homemade bomb. Authorities have said that as of now, there is no connection between the two incidents.

As thousands of football fans gathered in East Rutherford for Sunday's Giants game against the New Orleans Saints, state police said troopers providing security near the game will be on alert.

"In light of recent events, troopers will remain vigilant. The security at MetLife Stadium is robust, comprehensive, and flexible. As with any event, operation plans are adjusted continuously to provide the best possible security," state police said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, MetLife Stadium tweeted a reminder on their policy for bringing items into the stadium in clear bags.

Police also urged fans to "be vigilant," and "if you see something, say something."

Any suspicious activity can be reported by calling 1-800-4SAFENJ.
