On Jan. 19, police responded to the area of 6th and Surf avenues and receiving a report regarding a hit-and-run accident in which a vehicle struck a dog that was on a leash, being walked down the street by his owner. Police say the vehicle hit the dog, named "Kingston," but then continued along Surf Avenue without stopping or reporting what had happened. Kingston, an Irish Water Spaniel, later died as a result of his injuries.

"The vehicle that left the scene was described as possibly a dark colored 2004 Dodge Stratus with front end damage and missing a headlight as a result of the accident," North Wildwood Police said in a press release Tuesday.

According to the release, police conducted an investigation that led them to John Addae of Atlantic County. Police say Addae, who cooperated with investigators, was ultimately located with his vehicle, which was a 2004 black Dodge Stratus, fitting the description of the car that fled the scene.

Addae was charged with cruelty to animals, "which is a petty disorderly persons offense," police said in the release. Authorities also charged him with leaving the scene of an accident, careless driving and failure to report an accident.
