NJ has so many municipalities, 75 of them have to share the same names

We manage to cram a lot of towns into this small space we call the Garden State, with a whopping 565 municipalities.
So many, it seems, that we haven't been able to find a unique name for each of them: 75 municipalities share the same 33 monikers. And we're not even counting the towns that add "Lake" or "Park" to the end or "East" or "North" to the beginning.
The most popular name is "Washington," used by no less than six municipalities in five counties. There actually used to be seven Washingtons until the folks in Mercer County had the good sense in 2008 to change theirs to Robbinsville.
Franklin is also popular — there's five. And who knew there were two Monroes and two Harrisons?
There used to be even more duplication back in the day. For example, Edison until 1954 was one of several Raritans in Central Jersey. Old Bridge used to just be another Madison until 1975. And before 1992, Long Hill in Morris County went by Passaic.
As for the rest, couldn't we come up with some variety? Not that there's been a lack of trying in some parts: You can't beat Ho-Ho-Kus. Although Cape May County seems to have given up when they settled on "Upper," "Middle" and "Lower" townships.
Here's a list of all the New Jersey municipalities with the same names.
