The test you take to get a drivers license in New Jersey could soon be changing.

Legislation could soon be adopted in Trenton that would require the state Motor Vehicle Commission to add questions about sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, skaters and motor scooters and other non-motorized vehicles.

Another area that could soon be addressed on the driver’s test is the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning while people are sitting in their vehicle.

“The New Jersey driver’s test is always a work in progress," said Ray Martinez , the chief administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. "Obviously, there’s always new legislation, new regulations, because the roadways are getting more complicated.”

He pointed out the driver’s manual and the rules of the road constantly need to be updated because people are now doing things they would never do 10 or 20 years ago.

“People are wearing ear buds, they’re looking at their electronic devices as they walk into intersections. You know, you didn’t see people walking down the road just reading a book or reading a newspaper, and yet you do see this now,” he said.

Martinez explained the driver’s manual is updated online in printed form at least once a year but “it’s fair to say that even the day that it’s published it becomes obsolete to a certain extent because new legislation can be passed the following day.”

He pointed out the online electronic version is updated much more frequently but it’s not instantaneous.

“We do have a vendor that we work with that has to do that. There is a cost involved, so usually we’ll try to wait for two or three changes. But some questions may be added to the driver’s test very rapidly if there’s a particular tragedy out on the roadways, whether it’s in New Jersey or elsewhere, then we’ll try to address that.”

He said even if you already have a driver’s license, you can use the driver’s manual to sharpen up your skills.

“I just took the practice exam. There are 20 questions there. I got 18 of 20. I wish I got 20 out of 20,” he said.

“It’s good for people to practice, to read the manual, to do practice exams because there are some things they may not be aware of.”

There are more than 350 questions in the current pool of questions for the driver’s test, and 50 are randomly selected for that exam.

“I wish it could be longer but the truth is people would be there a lot longer,” he said.
