A lockdown at Monroe Township Schools has been lifted with the capture of an escaped prisoner, the district has confirmed.

Parents were notified shortly before 2 p.m. via email and text that students in the Middlesex County school district are no longer sheltering in place and are again being allowed in-and-out of their school buildings.

Dismissal from school for the day will proceed as normal.

Earlier, the school superintendent's office Jamesburg police confirmed an active search  for the escapee but said there was no immediate threat to the students.and the lockdown was in effect as a precaution.

The district has eight schools, including six for the elementary grades.
