A Trenton mother was arrested after leaving her daughter in the car that was then stolen as she crossed the street to use an ATM.

NJ Advance Media reported Marshay Smith's car was was running around 2 p.m. when it was stolen with the 5-year-old in the back seat. Smith called police and 9 minutes later they found the car in a parking lot a half-mile away with the girl unharmed.

Smith was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and released pending a court date.

Hours before the theft Trenton Police posted on their Facebook page it's illegal to leave a car idling with the engine running. Police wrote that "it’s the leading contributing factor to cars stolen in the City of Trenton, and is against New Jersey law."
