Judge Allows Atlantic City Boardwalk Jitney Test

Motorized jitneys will get to carry passengers on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

A judge rejected a challenge by two rolling chair companies. They claimed the jitney trams would cause financial harm to their 200 operators, add too much traffic to the boardwalk and could damage the walkway.

The City Council will allow the jitneys to operate on a trial basis between Thursday and May 2.

The Press of Atlantic City  reports the jitneys, which resemble long golf carts, will begin charging a $3 fee on Saturday.

Rolling chair operators charge $5 to push passengers six blocks.

If the trial is successful, jitneys would begin regular runs in the summer.
