Influential political figures including Republican Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez attended the inauguration Monday.

Fulop was sworn in as Jersey City's 49th mayor during a private ceremony in his City Hall office just after midnight Sunday. He defeated incumbent Jerramiah Healy in May.

Fulop worked on Wall Street and enlisted in the Marines shortly after Sept. 11, 2001. He was elected to the city council in 2005. He says he wants to improve the schools, reduce crime and spur development in and outside of the gentrified downtown of New Jersey's second-largest city.
