City police said Jasmine Briggs' boyfriend left their Marshall Drive apartment Wednesday night to avoid escalating an argument between the two, and that's when Briggs is alleged to have dropped the white pit bull out the window, the report said.

The boyfriend, who was not identified in the report, stayed outside the home with the dog until police arrived. Briggs is charged with fourth-degree animal cruelty and is free on bail, according to police who spoke with NBC.

The dog broke a leg and had to undergo surgery and the animal hospital, News 12 reported.

NBC New York also previously reported an officer with the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said animal abuse can often be a precursor to domestic violence incidents between humans.
