Republicans didn't gain a single seat in the State senate and they lost a seat in the General Assembly in Tuesday's elections.

Democrats are doing a victory lap, but GOP Governor Chris Christie is downplaying the election results and the role he played in them.

"The fact is that they won one seat that they really won in April," claims Christie. "They redistricted a Republican into a district with a 16-point Democratic registration advantage with the (Democratic) Senate President (Steve Sweeney) at the top of the ticket."

In the spring, a redistricting committee redrew New Jersey's legislative map based upon the latest Census figures. Incumbent Republican Assemblyman Dominick DiCicco was a victim of the new map.

Democratic State Committee chairman, John Wisniewski says he expected Christie to blame the new map, but adds, "He clearly wanted to be a factor in this election by injecting himself in his TV commercials and his personal appearances (but) I think the State of New Jersey is quickly increasing in its 'Christie Fatigue Index.'"

Christie says Wisniewski has no business crowing about winning one seat when in the so-called competitive state legislative races Democrats had far more registered voters. The Governor also points out that more county seats are now Republican-controlled.

"Yeah, I got involved," says Christie. "I'm the leader of my Party. I'm going to fight in the places where I think we have a chance, but I was very clear from the beginning that I was no guarantor of results here……..Obviously I'm a competitive guy. I would have liked to have won some more races. The fact is that the map did pretty much what I thought the map would do."

Wisniewski says, "For weeks, our Governor has been lowering expectations in the hope that he could claim a victory……..Well, like the braggart who's 'all hat and no cattle,' our Governor was 'all coat and no tails.'"

Christie accuses Wisniewski of working more on "pithy quotes," than on helping fix the problems in this state. Referring to the new map again, he said, "When you have a Governor whose approval ratings are 58% statewide and you can't have one Republican elected in the State Legislature, new Republican on that map, I think it tells you everything you need to know about the map."

On Wednesday, the Governor stumped for GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in New England. In a fairly pithy quote, Wisniewski says, "I have a message for Governor Christie - I hope you do for Mitt Romney what you've done for New Jersey Republicans."
