Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says the shooting occurred shortly after East Orange police responded to a reported stabbing in progress on Monday morning.

Murray says responding officers found 32-year-old Karlando Roberts of East Orange stabbing his father-in-law. Murray says officers repeatedly ordered Roberts to drop the knife, and he was shot when he refused to comply with their directives.

Roberts died a short time later at a hospital.

The shooting is under investigation by the prosecutor's office, which is standard policy in police-involved shootings.
