New Jersey authorities say two children found living in a 5-by-10-foot unit at a storage facility had been staying there about a month.

Police said Friday that the children, ages 5 and 10, were examined at a hospital and found to be unharmed. They are now in state custody.

Their mother, 27-year-old Sheena Johnson, was charged with child endangerment.

Police say Johnson had rented the unit at the storage facility in Ewing. Inside police found bags of clothing and other household items inside, a mattress and a backpack.

Officers checked the facility after Johnson was arrested Thursday for allegedly slashing her ex-boyfriend's tires and she told them her kids were waiting for a bus near a storage lot.

Police did not know Friday if she had hired a lawyer.
