Christie has been criticized by some political foes. He just returned from a trip to Washington state, Montana, North Dakota and Michigan, and will soon head to Ohio, Wisconsin and Indiana.

At an appearance in Jersey City on Tuesday, Christie said it's state policy -- and not his decision -- to have the state police accompany him everywhere. He joked that there are times he would "like to shake" his security detail when he's on the road.

Christie also says he hasn't traveled any more than previous governors, but it seems that way because he gets more notoriety for it.
