Authorities: Student struck as driver ignores school bus’ signals
LAKEWOOD (AP) — Authorities say a young boy was seriously injured when he was struck and dragged by a car whose driver allegedly ignored the flashing lights of a stopped school bus.
Ocean County prosecutors say the 9-year-old Lakewood boy was struck around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, as he was trying to cross the street. The car was driven by 26-year-old Lakewood resident Michael Adler.
Prosecutors say the boy was dragged about 80 feet through an intersection. He was unconscious when emergency crews arrived, and was being treated at a hospital for head and other injuries.
Further details on his condition were not disclosed.
Adler was cited for reckless driving and failing to stop for a school bus. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and other charges may be filed.
