PENNSVILLE — Police say a 4-year-old Salem County child drowned Sunday after falling into the family swimming pool.

According to a statement from the Pennsville Police Department, police responded to a home on South Broadway at about 5:17 p.m. after receiving a report that there had been a possible drowning.

Pennsville Chief of Police Allen J. Cummings told, the young boy's parents and brother were also home at the time. When the father called his kids to dinner, he noticed the 4-year-old was missing, the article states. The boy was found outside in the pool, unresponsive, and was pulled out by the father, the chief told

According to police, arriving officers immediately began CPR when they noticed that the boy wasn't breathing and had no pulse. The child was transported to The Memorial Hospital of Salem County in Mannington Township, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said in a statement.

"So sorry for the loss of a young child," Pennsville police said on their Facebook page Sunday evening.

No additional information about the child or the circumstances has been released by authorities.
