UNION CITY (AP) — An elderly man is dead and his daughter is hospitalized in critical condition with burns following an early-morning fire in Union City.

Family members tell The Jersey Journal that 94-year-old Miguel Gutierrez died in the fire that broke out in the home on 34th Street around 3:35 a.m. Monday. His body was found in the hallway outside a second-floor bedroom.

His daughter, 62-year-old Marcia Masadeh, suffered severe burns. Her husband, Mohamad Masadeh, was treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation. Another person in the home escaped unharmed.

North Hudson Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Montagne told the newspaper that the fire apparently started in the home's dining area, but the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
