Wedding gift confusion — How much is too much?

Giving wedding gifts can be a definite nuisance for those attending a friend or family member's wedding. For some, it's a struggle to figure out how much is too generous or too cheap.

The relationship to the couple, the cost per plate, whether or not you are going solo and wedding locale are all factors people consider when cracking the code on what to give.

According to RetailMeNot.com, the average person spends between $45 to $195. And what people spend really depends on their relationship to the couple getting married. The closer you are to the couple, the more you are likely to give. In fact, according to a report published in fivethirtyeight.com, SurveyMonkey Audience ran a poll last year that asked people how much they spend on wedding gifts and the answers varied depending on their relationship to the couple:

  • Immediate family - $147
  • Extended family - $71
  • Close friend - $82
  • Just a friend - $50
