Why helicopters will be flying low around the Statue of Liberty
NEW YORK — Low flying helicopters around the Statue of Liberty on Saturday are part of a military exercise.
Ten military helicopters will be flying a military exercise on Saturday between 1 and 3 p.m. around the Statue of Liberty, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the East River and the Harlem River, according to a spokesman for the NYPD.
The exercise will be repeated on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday night Lady Liberty went dark, except for her torch and crown, because a lighting system controller was not properly reset after it was switched off to change out faulty lighting equipment.
