President Barack Obama says the deal announced during his Asia trip between Boeing and Lion Air is an example of progress in opening markets and boosting exports that will help create jobs and growth in the United States.

In his weekly radio and Internet message, Obama says building a strong economy with staying power has as much to do with creating markets for U.S. goods as it does with restoring America's manufacturing might.

For the Republicans, Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey expressed criticisms of the administration, including failed stimulus programs, overspending and overtaxing.

He says the U.S. could go down the same road as Europe with its debt crisis without serious tax code reform. He calls for lower tax rates, a simpler code and an end to special interest tax breaks and loopholes.
