RWJ University Hospital Earns Prestigious Award for Nursing Excellence — Again
Congratulations are in order: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick received its seventh consecutive Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It's something only seven organizations worldwide and only two academic medical centers have achieved.
Since 1997, RWJUH has continuously held Magnet designation. This rigorous triennial designation is a mark of excellence achieved by only 10% of hospitals in the U.S.
“Receiving continuous Magnet recognition for nearly three decades is a truly special legacy of sustained nursing excellence,” said Bill Arnold, Chief Executive Officer of RWJUH. “This milestone reflects how their work continues to advance nursing practice and strengthen care for our patients across the highest level of healthcare services at an academic medical center.”
Indeed, the commission identified these areas of excellence during the re-designation process:
- RWJUH Chief Nursing Officer Maureen Harding’s MSN, BSN, RN exemplary advocacy for and support of nurses’ well-being
- The high percentage of RWJUH nurses who hold professional nursing certifications
- 86.6% of RWJUH nurses have a baccalaureate degree or higher in nursing
- Exceeding data benchmark for fall injury prevention in ambulatory departments and injury prevention in procedural and surgical settings

Long-term analysis shows that organizations with Magnet recognition tend to have improved patient satisfaction, lower 30-day mortality and failure-to-rescue rates, and higher nurse job satisfaction.
The re-designation process included hospital officials submitting extensive paperwork in December and then hosting three ANCC appraisers for a three-day site visit in May.
Five other hospitals in the RWJBarnabas Health network hold the prestigious Magnet designation for nursing excellence:

- Jersey City Medical Center
- Monmouth Medical Center, which was awarded elite Magnet with Distinction recognition
- Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton
