Sen. Shirley Turner says moving the Nov. 5 general election to Oct. 16 would save taxpayers $12 million.

The change would be good for this year only.

Gov. Chris Christie set Oct. 16 as the date for a special election to determine who will fill Sen. Frank Lautenberg's U.S. Senate seat for a year. Lautenberg died on Monday.

Christie says he wants to hold the Senate election as soon as possible.

Critics say the Republican does not want to have his own race overshadowed by a Senate contest likely to feature Democrat Cory Booker of Newark.

Christie would almost certainly veto the bill.
