PATH Trains Handled Record Ridership In 2011

PATH trains handled record ridership shuttling passengers between New Jersey and New York City in 2011.

The 76.6 million commuter trips surpassed the old record of 74.9 million recorded in 2008.

The Port Authority says the record ridership follows an investment of more than $1 billion over four years for new cars, station upgrades and the installation of a new signal system to the 104-year-old rail system.

The new cars allow for faster exit and entry.

Harrison and Hoboken stations are undergoing renovations and platforms along the World Trade Center-Newark line will also be extended to accommodate 10-car trains.

Officials say computerized signals along the 43 miles of PATH track will result in fewer delays and better safety.
