Police have recovered a painted-over BB gun at the scene where they shot a man early Monday morning, the Bergen County prosecutor's office said.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said Matthew Chaseman, 46, crashed his car around 3:30 a.m. near the Passaic Street ext in Rochelle Park. Chaseman remained in his car after the accident, the prosecutor's office said — it is not clear from information released by authorities so far what prompted officers to fire at the Maywood resident.

The weapon turned out to be a BB gun with its orange tip painted over, the prosecutor's office said.

Police were called by a security guard on duty in the building where Chaseman crashed, the prosecutor's office said.

Molinelli said Chaseman suffered injuries in his lower extremities. The officers were not hurt in the incident.

NorthJersey.com reports officers later removed a bow-and-arrow and other items from Chaseman's apartment.
