HOWELL — An NJ Transit bus was involved in a crash with a pickup truck in Monmouth County on Wednesday afternoon, knocking out power to hundreds of homes and businesses.

NJ Transit spokeswoman Lisa Torbic said the No. 139 bus was heading south on Route 9 at 1:47 p.m. when it struck a pickup truck at Georgia Tavern Road near Route 195.

The bus, which was en route to Lakewood from New York's Port Authority station, was carrying eight passengers with one person suffering a minor injury. The driver was "shaken up" but was not seriously injured, according to Torbic

The bus veered off the road and struck a utility pole before stopping on the grass.  A photograph released by Howell police shows a snapped utility pole on the ground near a damaged guard rail and transformer box. The traffic signal at Georgia Tavern Road is not working, according to Howell Police.

The stretch of Route 9 southbound was closed for clean-up and the investigation as of 3:10 p.m.

JCP&L's outage map shows 732 customers without power in Howell, which the utility's outage map said is the result of a "vehicle accident."

It's the second crash of the week involving an NJ Transit bus. Thirteen  people were injured Monday when a bus headed from Montclair to Newark's Penn Station was hit by a 19-year-old driver.  The driver was ticketed for careless driving and failure to have a license.
