At a time when many in the Asbury Park community are grappling with economic hardship, food insecurity, and personal crisis, one organization continues to serve as a beacon of hope: Mercy Center.  Over the past year, Mercy Center has seen not only an extraordinary increase in the need for services - but also a remarkable growth in its ability to respond.

“Every day, we see families standing on the edge, parents unsure how they’ll feed their children, survivors of violence searching for safety, and students struggling to imagine a future,” said Kim Guadagno, President & CEO of Mercy Center. “But every day, because of the compassion and generosity of this community, we’re able to say: You are not alone.”

Food Pantry Sees Record Growth

Mercy Center’s Food Pantry continues to be one of the organization’s most utilized programs and often the first point of contact for struggling families. This year, the center served more than 118,000 people, up from 109,000 the previous year.

“That increase is more than just a number, it’s a reflection of very real hardship,” said Tracy Wilson, Food Pantry Director. “We’re seeing more working families who simply can’t keep up with rising costs.”

The organization’s SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) advocacy also experienced a dramatic rise. Last year, just over 1,600 individuals received assistance enrolling in the program. This year, that number climbed to nearly 8,000.  For many, SNAP is the difference between hunger and stability.

Support for Survivors Expands

Mercy Center’s Family Resource Center also expanded significantly, offering crucial services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Last year, 477 individuals received support through these programs. This year, that number rose to 612.

“This is deeply personal, one-on-one work, helping people in their darkest moments reclaim their sense of safety, agency, and dignity,” said Ms. Guadagno.

Education That Breaks the Cycle

Meanwhile, Sisters Academy, Mercy Center’s tuition-free school for girls grades 4th through 8th, continues to foster the next generation of leaders. Through academic rigor, emotional support, and a focus on values, the Academy prepares students for high school, college, and a future beyond poverty.

“Every student at Sisters Academy represents possibility,” said Principal Tom Bugliaro. “Their success is proof of what happens when a community comes together around hope and opportunity.”

A Community Effort

Mercy Center credits its success to the deep and continued support of the community through donations, volunteer efforts, partnerships, and prayers.

“Whether you give time, resources, or simply keep us in your heart, you are part of this mission,” said Kim Guadagno. “This is how we fight poverty - not with pity, but with partnership.”
