I got a jury summons for Superior Court of New Jersey, Ocean County, telling me to report in September.  I filled out the mandatory questionnaire online and now am just one step away from deciding someone’s fate.  I have to call (or check online) the night before I’m supposed to report to make sure there’s a reason to report, but that’s the only obstacle left prior to reporting.

Many people try to avoid serving on a jury, but not me…aside from the geeky “civic responsibility” reason, when else do you get to decide someone’s future?  I WANT to sit in the courtroom and listen to someone’s testimony and determine if they’re credible; I WANT to send a ruffian to the hoosegow for assaulting an old lady.

So, what do you think, is jury duty a civic responsibility, a pain in the butt, or both?
