Authorities tell The Star Ledger the man jumped from the car around 6:05 Thursday evening, and skidded 50 feet before hitting his head on the curb.

He's identified as 35-year-old Tabier Hernandez of Ridgewood. Hernandez died in the hospital Friday morning.

Police say Hernandez was riding in the back seat of a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by 21-year-old Mohamed Thoun of Keyport. Thoun was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of narcotics. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

Det. Matthew Bandurski tells the newspaper that Thoun told police Hernandez may have ingested drugs before jumping out.

The incident is still being investigated.
