You most likely have plans for New Years' Eve, but what about New Year's Day? The state is offering a perk for New Jerseyans on Sunday, and it may be especially helpful for those looking to slim down in 2012.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will sponsor several free guided hikes and a horseback ride in state parks and trails, as part of a nationwide America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative.

"The idea is to get people into the new year on the right foot," explains Lawrence Hajna, a spokesman for the state DEP. "Getting them into the outdoors and exercising, and enjoying the beauty of New Jersey's natural landscapes."

Hajna says participants will enjoy the benefit of an expert on hand, who will explain the history of the area and any specific sights they may encounter.

"It should really make the hike come to life for (the participants)," he says.

This is the first time New Jersey will participate in the initiative, which originated more than 20 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation in Massachusetts.

Hajna says Sunday's hikes are available for amateurs and veterans; folks can find one-mile walks, as well as trails that last for 15 miles.
