The other day I wrote about a teen caught shoplifting at a local clothing outlet. When loss prevention summoned the kid’s father to the store, he took matters into his own hands.

Literally.

By beating the kid senseless.

Wrong way to go about it!

But since there are a good many parents that act as apologists for their kids; in a way hearing about a father who is disciplining his son is “refreshing” – albeit cruel to the extreme in the above cited case.

And I wonder if there had been more parents who, on occasion, had given their kids a “smack,” would we be hearing stories of bratty kids turning into incorrigible adults?

Somehow I think not.

But that’s the way we, of a certain age, were raised. You got out of line – you got “smacked!”

Take Justin Bieber. Nary a week goes by that you don’t hear of him making “news” doing something stupid.

I say “news” because stories like this shouldn’t be considered news.

But they are, and when we do hear of them, we wonder, “…where are (were) their parents in all of this?”

“Shouldn’t this kid have gotten a “smack” or two when he was growing up – just to allow him to respect authority – which, judging by the looks of things he clearly does not.

The pop star was arrested early Thursday for drag racing and DUI in Miami Beach, police confirmed on Twitter.

Bieber, 19, was in a rented Lamborghini.

The bad boy's entourage had apparently used their cars to block traffic on Pine Tree Drive at 26th Street, says the Miami Herald , to create a drag strip for the star.

According to Miami Beach Police Sgt. Bobby Hernandez, the incident happened about 4 a.m. "He was pulled over and failed a field sobriety test," Hernandez told the Orlando Sun-Sentinel.

Tests show that Bieber was under the influence of drugs, Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez tells the Herald. Bieber was incoherent, had his hands in his pockets and resisted arrest without violence, Martinez said.

The star's next stop will likely be Miami-Dade County's Main Jail, where he will be booked and processed and bail will be set.

The Opa-locka Police Department is also investigating an unauthorized escort of Bieber, a police spokesman told NBC 6 on Wednesday.

"We know it was an unauthorized detail," Assistant City Manger David Chiverton confirmed to the Herald. "We are trying to determine where the authorization for the officers to escort Mr. Bieber came from, where he was escorted and how many of our officers were involved."

Bieber has been spotted in different places in the Miami area in the past few days, and has been posting videos and photos of himself smoking a cigar, skateboarding at Lil Wayne's Miami Skate Park, seeing the sun rise, and noting all the paparazzi aimed at him on the beach.

E! reports he spent some time with his dad, Jeremy Bieber. And on Monday, the singer and pals hit Mansion nightclub before heading to King of Diamonds strip club.

And this all comes on the heels of his recent egg incident. Earlier this month, Bieber's home was searched after he was thought to have pelted a neighbor's home with eggs. During that search, Lil Za, a member of Bieber's crew, was arrested for cocaine possession.

At 19 he’s an adult, and probably past the age of getting “smacked” by his parents.

But while I’ll concede that in 2014 “smacking” one’s kids is an antiquated notion – don’t you think this kid could have used one or two growing up? Smacks, that is!

Now, apparently, he goes off to jail to gain “street cred” and be a “badass!”

A “smack” at the right time probably would have prevented that!
