Much has been made of New Jersey's congestion, and new data shows 10 counties in the state are among the most populated in the country.

Business Insider.com crunched the census numbers showing the ten are among the 146 of the nation's most crowded.

Rutgers Demographer James Hughes says at an 1180 people-per-square mile average population density, we are more crowded that Japan or India.

"We are a very dense place indeed, so it's not surprising that many of our counties are the densest in the country," said Hughes.

Those ten counties include Bergen, Middlesex, Essex, Hudson, Monmouth, Ocean and Camden counties.

There is also an interesting contrast to New Jersey's population density.  There are places in the state, such as the Pine Barrens for instance, where that density average drops down to just a few people per square mile, and they are within a hour's drive of the highly-populated areas.
